The Shadow Keeper: Gothic Haunting Tales from Somerset

By E.L. Ravenheart

Between the northern forests and the Somerset moors, ancient boundaries are failing.

In the deep woods of the Great Lakes, skeletal spirits hunt the arrogant. Shapeshifters guard what remains of the wild. Hunger transforms the soul with a single choice. Across the Atlantic, on mist-shrouded moorland where ley-lines pulse through peat, a barefoot girl walks for two centuries, keeping a covenant her family refused. At standing stones, trickster ravens teach threshold lessons. In dark pools, witnesses become bridges between worlds.

And in the concrete spaces we call safe — nursing homes, apartment complexes, locked rooms — older hungers wake and feed.

The Shadow Keeper weaves Indigenous Chippewa mythology with British gothic folklore into ten interconnected tales of transformation, sacrifice, and the terrible price of keeping balance. Drawing on ancestral storytelling traditions and the haunted landscapes of Somerset, E.L. Ravenheart crafts atmospheric horror where memory carries power, shadows have intent, and every doorway leads somewhere unexpected.

What's inside:

  • 10 interconnected gothic and horror short stories
  • A blend of Indigenous Chippewa mythology and British folklore
  • Set across the Great Lakes wilderness and the Somerset moors
  • The opening collection in the Powers of St. Katherine's House cycle

The boundaries are thin. The keepers are tired. And hunger never sleeps.

Loved the short stories. The Bear Walkers were my favourite. Great Story telling

Immersive, Polished and Genuinely Chilling

The setting is so vivid that I could almost feel the cold air and hear the house settling around me. Every chapter adds another layer of unease without sacrificing character or plot. An immersive, polished and genuinely chilling book.

Hauntingly Atmospheric and Beautifully Dark

Review of *The Shadow Keeper* by E.L. Ravenheart *The Shadow Keeper* is a beautifully dark collection of gothic haunting tales that feels as though it has been pulled from the misty Somerset landscape itself.
What makes this book particularly compelling is the atmosphere. Ravenheart creates a world where **ancient places, folklore, nature and the supernatural are inseparable**. There is something wonderfully unsettling about the way ordinary landscapes become places of mystery, where the past hasn't quite finished speaking and the shadows seem to have memories of their own. The stories carry that wonderful gothic quality of **slow-building dread rather than relying solely on shock**. There is an eerie intimacy to the writingyou feel as though someone is telling you these stories beside a dying fire, quietly warning you not to wander too far into the darkness. I particularly enjoyed the way folklore and haunting are woven together. There is a strong sense of place throughout, and Somerset becomes almost a character in its own right: ancient, atmospheric and carrying secrets beneath its surface. And then there's the author herself apparently asking readers to *read something relaxing before bed* while presenting them with *The Shadow Keeper*If you enjoy **gothic horror, folklore, ghost stories, atmospheric mysteries and tales that linger in your thoughts long after you've finished reading**, this is definitely one to add to your reading list. Just don't blame E.L. Ravenheart if you start wondering what might be lurking in the shadows after midnight.
**A hauntingly atmospheric collection for readers who like their horror steeped in folklore, mystery and a little darkness.
